Shearing Day is Erika's second design in a series of original patterns in which she pays homage to sheep, shepherds, and the bonds between them. These designs are metaphoric “love letters” to farm yarn and to the animals and people who pour their hearts and souls into producing it for knitters.
Overview:
Construction: a triangle shawl, begun with a garter tab cast-on, increasing 4 sts on every RS row along a central spine and before the garter border at each edge
Dimensions: wingspan approximately 60” (152.5 cm); depth approximately 27” (68.5 cm)
Yarn Suggestion: Shorn V, a 3-ply, DK weight, 100% natural wool, mostly Corriedale sourced from Seven Sisters Farm (Illinois) and Ewe and Us (Nebraska), approximately 250 yards in 3.5 ounces (228.5 meters in 100 grams)
Yardage Requirements: 750 yards (686 meters) total; 250 yards (228.5 meters) of each of three colors: dark (C1), medium (C2), and light (C3). Sample used 88 grams of C1, 92 grams of C2, and 92 grams of C3, exclusive of swatching. This design maximizes yardage. Save your swatch to unravel if needed. The final Woven Slip Sts section is optional to help manage yardage.
Gauge: Aim for a gauge of 19 sts (+/- half st) across stitch patterns, knit flat, after blocking, in 4” (10 cm). Row gauge, knit flat, after blocking, in 4” (10 cm) is approximately 26 rows in stockinette, 36 rows in Stripe & Spot, and 38 rows in garter stitch, Wickerwork, and Woven Slip Stitches. It is recommended to swatch in garter stitch and Woven Slip Stitches. Exact gauge is not crucial but will affect yardage.
Needle: US7 (4.5 mm), or whatever needle size meets gauge for each stitch pattern, on a minimum 40” (100 cm) cord
Notions: 4 stitch markers, cable needle (optional), tapestry needle
