Tech Editing
Hi there! I'm Melissa
I'm an English professor who also loves calculations and spreadsheets--a combination that's perfect for Technical Editing.

I offer a range of services for knitwear designers, including technical editing, schematics, charts, and style sheets. Through my online knitting classes, YouTube podcast, and blog, I've been helping knitters understand and modify garment patterns for over a decade. I would be happy to help you launch your first--or fiftieth!--sweater into the world. While I specialize in garments, I'm also excited to work with you on a variety of accessories, from hats to cowls to mitts.
Every collaboration begins with a free quote. I would love to hear about your latest project. Scroll down for more information . . . and then, please get in touch!

Added Bonus: I often feature patterns that I tech edit on YouTube, on this website, and on Instagram.
Pattern Editing
Want to feel confident that your pattern is ready for knitters? Let me double check your stitch counts, measurements, and written instructions. I'll work one on one with you to make sure your pattern is ready for its debut!
Schematics & Charts
Looking for some assistance with pattern schematics or charts? I'm happy to generate either (or both!) for your next pattern.
Style Sheets
Want some help creating a recognizable brand for your designs? A style sheet can help! I can create a fresh style sheet or revitalize the systems you're already using.
Frequently Asked Questions
1
How much will it cost?
Before any tech edit begins, I offer a free estimate. This allows me to learn more about your specific needs and avoid editing tasks that you don't require. Once I get to work on your pattern, I charge an hourly fee, rather than a flat rate.

Depending on complexity, garments tend to take about 3-5 hours to tech edit. I do not charge for the time we spend communicating (via email, for example), and the final pass before publication is always free!
2
What's your availability?
During the estimate phase, I will let you know my availability for the requested job. Once I begin working on a pattern, I can typically turn around a first-pass within a week. Ideally, we can wrap up any questions or final changes within a few days after that.
I like to plan ahead and know which pattern(s) I'll be working on in any given week, so unless there are extenuating circumstances, I do not take "rush" jobs.
3
What's the process like?
It all begins with you!
Once I hear from you, I will request a draft of the pattern so that I can give you an accurate estimate for cost and my own availability for the edit.

Once we've worked out the details, I'll get to work on your pattern and return it to you with comments, questions, and suggestions within the agreed-upon time-frame.
When you're ready for publication, I offer a free final check to make sure everything looks great!
